"Reading Blocks" Rules

A concentration activity while recognizing sight words.
Select 10 words from below the game by clicking on the button to the left of each word. As words are selected they will appear in the Reading Blocks grid. With the tenth word a prompt will appear, instructing to click start. With the click of start the words are shuffled in the grid and a random picture is hidden behind the grid. Click on grid tiles to reveal words that were chosen two at a time. When the two words match each other a click will remove those tiles to reveal a part of the hidden picture. Once a picture is completely revealed clicking start will reshuffle the words already picked and change the hidden picture. A selected word may be changed by clicking on its button then selecting a new word.

Words may be chosen for their length, for similar beginning letters, for certain sounds, etc. One exercise is to choose words that make sentences of up to ten words. Upon commiting those words to their reading vocabulary a student will appreciate and recognize being able to confidently read.

Sight word recognition is how we actually read, but is not a replacement for phonics. Phonics is necessary for deciphering new words we come across and provides hints to recall words that are already in a reading vocabulary.

Example: "the big black dog ran out to play with it"
